Empowering Women, One Cup at a Time
Kahawa means coffee in Swahili our language and our story begins. Coffee origins trace back to the ancient forests of Ethiopia, but before it made its way back to Africa in the late eighteen hundreds, it traveled the world.
Margaret Nyamumbo, the founder of Kahawa, grew up in a community of Kenyan coffee farmers. Her grandfather, a driver for the colonial government, managed to get his hands on coffee seedlings and start a farm. However, Margaret quickly noticed a deep inequality women provided the majority of labor in the coffee industry but owned only a small fraction of the land.
After studying in the USA, Margaret returned to Kenya with a mission to bring Kenyan coffee to the world while ensuring that the hardworking women farmers reap the rewards of their labor.
